With an estimated population of about 42 million, Tanzania's per capita cement consumption of 50.0 kg per annum fall way below global average. Tanzania’s economy is expected to grow at an estimated 7.0 % over the next five years, supported by the manufacturing, mining and tourism sectors. The improving performance of the economy has fueled strong growth in cement demand and the prospects remain favourable, given the linear relationship between economic growth and cement consumption.
Dangote Cement PLC is setting up a 1.5 MTPA Integrated Cement plant in port city of Mtwara in Tanzania. With good Limestone and Gypsum deposits, Tanzania attracts sound investment opportunities in the sector and also offers an ideal opportunity for Dangote Cement to foray and consolidate its operations in Eastern Africa. Site work has commenced for the green field Cement plant and is making steady progress towards timely commissioning in Q2 of 2014.
